I  have always been interested in eco technologies and lifestyle. Therefore I was excited to create a logo of a new product, made in Netherlands. The company focuses on developing wind turbines of next generation.

The working process was complicated and extended, as such kind of  market has It’s own rules. I had been working for a couple of weeks, before we found it, and the logo was accepted. Here are some options:

Memories about Dutch fresh rains, salt waves and tulips are still  in my head.  I hasten to give them shape in order to live out everything again. That is what my new Tulamp about.

Несколько дней назад пришлось написать сочинение в духе школьных на тему “Design for the real world”:

I suppose, that traditionally Design of a product or an area for the real world is formed under the influence of such factors as ergonomics, functionality, attractive shape and texture and optimization of manufacturing resources. Also an ecological aspect is becoming more and more important today. Personally, I think that the term “ergonomics” is sometimes too general and therefore I would like to suggest extending the term calling it “intellectual” or “mental” ergonomics. I would like to present my vision of the above mentioned factors and discuss them in detail.

Ergonomics. Different kinds of information around us are growing every day and such expression as “overabundance of information” appears. Not everybody is able to organize, assimilate and filter it quickly. Subconsciously or consciously people are longing for simplicity and are surrounding themselves with high-quality products, which are easy and convenient to use, being time- and effort-saving. Filling the object of Design (a computer device, a building, a program etc.) with a variety of functions is not a comprehensive solution for today. It is really important not to overload a user and not to cross the line, when the interaction with the product is complicated, long and tricky. A person and their mental and physical abilities should always remain the main measure for Design. That is why I suppose, that the term of ergonomic in the XXI century is not only the construction of a product in accordance with a human’s proportions and size. I believe it is the high time for the so-called “intellectual” or “emotional” ergonomics, focused on designing a product according to human mental and emotional abilities. I think, that there is a limit to informational volume in a product or space, when it is convenient to use. Adding a new function is only possible by replacing a temporary or outdated function of the product or by combining several functions in one complete action.

Today people aim at gaining simplicity and comfort and prefer not to be distracted by the product while working and not to spend much time on studying the manual. However it does not mean, that it is not necessary to experiment with the shape and texture of a product, interface or space. But together with this modern Design should not contradict with the idea of a product or distract from its gist. I think, it should be neutral before the user will pay attention to it. But when the user takes a look at the image and shape of the product, it should be attractive, arousing pleasant emotions and memories, rather than protest or discomfort.

Functionality. While creating a new product, building or interior, its function should always predetermine the shape. Definitely, when it comes to luxury goods, the way they look may come to the foreground, deposing its primary function. Sometimes commercially successful design products are made from materials, which contradict primary function of a product. A good example for this are tables and chairs originally meant to be stable, static and reliable, but produced from transparent and at first sight fragile materials, which imitate glass, laces, movement… There is some part of humour and a game here.

The approach, when the shape, texture and image of the product become the main function is not suitable for each category of expensive products. Let us compare a chandelier and a juicer. Various experiments with shape and decor of the first article are possible, without changing its primary function – to light. The number of user’s actions, necessary to make it work is minimal: to switch on the light. If we analyze the juicer everything is different. Its Design and aesthetic image will never become the main function. And one of the main reasons, I suppose, - is a higher amount of the user’s actions, necessary to make juice.

Eco-idea. Today it is appreciated, when a product is made from ecologically-friendly materials with minimal costs of energy and sources, easy to recycle etc. Nowadays making a product from eco-friendly materials is not enough to ensure its wide use. It should be functional and easy to use as its product-predecessor. Today people start to realize the importance of taking care of the environment, developing new eco-technologies and life style with minimal damage to our planet. And the society wants to live in a different way. But only few are ready to spent their time and efforts on changing habitual daily routines. Therefore, one of the main tasks of a modern Designer is to develop design of a product or an area, which would become part of an eco-lifestyle quickly and easily, without changing the habitual lifestyle. Design may appear to be a reliable instrument on the way to eco-life.

Source (raw, energy, time, space, costs) optimization and saving. Saving customer’s sources by optimizing materials, energy, waste, time or space consumption is one of the main tasks for a Designer. I also believe, that good Design may reduce the amount of actions in the process of the product exploitation minimizing the user’s time and efforts. Ideally a good Design can influence some activities and areas related to the product, sometimes even eliminating the need of excessive actions.

High sales and the widespread use of a product, with minimal investment in advertising – are reliable indicators of high quality of its Design. If a product is irreplaceable for customers, it works. People apply and appeal to such ideas and creations for years as they are real masterpieces which are eternal.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all my friends! I wish you health and freedom in all aspects of life! In business, creativity and self-expression, in communication with people… Don’t forget that your opinion and wishes are the most important  factors!

Bruno Stevens was interested in Minsk, and Minsk was interested in Bruno Stevens. 20 minutes after I decided to ask BS about interview my friend requested me to help him with the same. Belgian photographer, who took part in World Press Photo for many times, is well-known for his plots about nature disasters, war evil and other social shocks was working in Minsk for french Madame LeFigaro. During the week he discovered Belarussian industry of beauty and fashion: model agencies, Belarussian Fashion Week events, Minsk city and local girls. There were no parallels with disasters and failures at that time. That’s Bruno’s verdict about the trip:

L: What Minsk needs to become your favorite city?

B: I’m not sure, that I have favorite cities or something else. I like Minsk and local people. This trip is an interesting experience. And I’ll come back, I hope. I met a lot of people, including you, that I like. They are open and curious. It’s rather strange for me, because it’s a capital of so-called closed country. This is a paradox. And that’s what I’m interested in. A lot of people in Europe criticized Belarus, I’ve been really surprised to see it this way. I’m sure there are some problems, but there are problems everywhere, just different problems.

L: What about your best snapshot?

B: The next picture. There are few pictures I really proud of, but each picture is an encounter with somebody, with sort of situation. So I don’t like a competition. I can show to you the portfolio that lasts one hour with all strong images. Because I worked a lot, I produced a lot. Snapshots with some people are still hunting me. I wonder what happens with them, after the picture was taken. Some of them are still alive and I’m not sure about others. For instance, I remember a women in Cambodia, because she had tuberculoses and AIDS, and she was very-very week and very-very thin. I took her pictures 4 years ago. Probably she is dead, but I’ll never know. But her pictures are still there, in my head. That is the power oh photography.

L: Do some prejudices exist in modern photography? Or it needs more censorship to the contrary?

B: I don’t believe in censorship. I think it’s never work. The problem is not what you show it’s how you show it. There are a lot of cruelty in today’s movies. Even more than in reality. When I was in Iraq, after bombing I saw a severed arm. My friend, the photographer, couldn’t shoot this. He told it never will be published and just made some pictures of people looking at this arm from a distance. I decided it was impressive and I had to shoot this. A didn’t touch it, I made pictures. They were published everywhere, even in US. What was impressive, there were no blood near the hand. It was the effect that the hand was alive and was missing a person.

Once I was shooting an anti-war demonstration in Brussels and noticed a big banner across the street. People draw the fragment of my photograph as a symbol of a war. At that moment I thought that everything was done in a right way, that snapshoot is working. So I don’t show a plot, I offer it. If you’re able to catch a gist, your imagination is working.

L: Have you ever use the Photoshop?

B: I use Photoshop for each picture, but I don’t change anything… I remember the times, when I photographed with 4 megapixel camera.

Через 20 минут, после того, как я решила попросить об интервью Бруно Стивенса, мой приятель попросил меня о том же. Бруно интересовал Минск, а Минск был заинтересован в Бруно. Бельгийский фотограф - многократный участник World Press Photo, известный по сюжетам о последствиях природных катастроф, войн и других социальных потрясений, работал в Минске для французской Madame LeFigaro. На этот раз о параллелях с катастрофами и трагедиями не было и речи. Втечение недели Бруно интересовал вопрос индустрии моды в Беларуси: модельные агенства, события Belarussian Fashion Week и девушки города. Бруно остался доволен, и вердикт его был таков:

Л: Чего не хватает Минску, чтобы стать Вашим любимым городом?

Б: Не могу сказать, что у меня есть любимые города. Мне Минск нравится, надеюсь, что вернусь сюда. Я встретил много открытых доброжелательных людей, включая вас, которые мне понравились. Я полагал, что это столица закрытой для всего нового страны, поэтому удивлен, насколько Минск свободен и открыт. Это парадокс, и для меня он интересен. Конечно, я уверен, что есть какие-то проблемы, но они везде есть, везде они разные.

Л: Какой снимок, сделанный Вами, самый любимый?

Б: А я не знаю. Тот, который еще предстоит сделать, следующий. Есть несколько фотографий, которыми я горжусь, каждая - это неожиданная встреча, контакт с человеком или ситуацией. Я не люблю устраивать соревнование и говорить о том, что что-то лучше. Некоторые снимки сильнее, другие – слабее. Могу показать вам слайд-шоу портфолио длиной в час, в котором не будет слабых фотографий. Есть кадры людей, которые я очень хорошо помню. Знаю, что случилось в будущем с одними героями этих снимков, а о других не знаю ничего. Например, около 4-х лет назад я сфотографировал очень больную и слабую женщину в Камбодже, у нее был туберкулез и СПИД. Вероятно, она умерла, но я никогда этого не узнаю. А кадр все еще у меня в голове. Сейчас я готовлю книгу с фотографиями из Палестины, которые были сделаны 10 лет назад. Все герои снимков постарели на 10 лет, и я часто думаю, что случилось с этим ребенком, или с тем молодым парнем. Может он обзавелся семьей, а может и умер. Это интересно, потому что фотография все еще здесь. И в этом ее сила.

Л: Существуют ли предубеждения в современной фотографии. Или, наоборот, не хватает цензуры и нужны ограничения для любителей жестких сюжетов?

Б: Я не верю в цензуру, это никогда не работает. Суть не только в том, что ты показываешь, но и в том, как это делаешь. Как-то в Ираке после бомбежки я нашел оторванную часть руки. Фотограф, который оказался со мной рядом, не стал ее снимать, сказав, что никто не опубликует такое изображение. Он лишь сделал издалека фотографии людей, которые смотрят на нее. Я решил, что сюжет впечатляет, и я должен показать его. Мои снимки руки крупным планом напечатали везде. Я сфотографировал руку, а вокруг не было крови. Складывалось впечатление, что она жива и потеряла человека. Этот снимок напечатали везде, даже в Америке.

Как-то я снимал антивоенную демонстрацию в Брюсселе и заметил большой баннер, через всю улицу. Люди нарисовали фрагмент моей фотографии, как символ войны. Тогда я подумал, что все сделал правильно, снимок сработал. Я не показываю сюжет, я предлагаю. Если ты разглядел и уловил суть, значит твое воображение работает.

Л: Вы пользуетесь Photoshop?

Б: Я использую Photoshop для каждой фотографии. Но суть остается нетронутой. А вообще, было время, когда я снимал 4-х мегапиксельной камерой!

There were a lot of new objects and decorations at the Kazantip 2010 (the best festival at 13th Ibiza DJ Awards). A prominent kite surfer, inventor and never hurrying dreamer Kirill Cherenkov is telling about one of them in details:

L: So, a perfect beach house for a kite surfer? Home or bar?

K: I think, this is a perfect beach house, not only for kiters! For instance, this construction may be a quite decent base for Wildlife researchers in Africa, or a small mobile angar for the airfield. The advantages of such building are obvious: it’s easily transported on a conventional car’s trailer and transforms in two-bedroom apartments. Also you may use the space under the house effectively.

L: What about the way, which your idea overcame. From sketches, which I saw last winter, to the real object, survived the Kazantip.

K: I can’t say, that this idea belongs to me totally. It’s a successful development of Vladimir Ermolov’s (“Verteco” company ) idea, adapted and refined by Denis Shadrin (known as “Os”), a genial engineer, worked with the same kind of projects a lot. “Star Wars”, “The Apollo 13″ and “The Lunar Rover 2” chronicles were really inspired us.

L: How do you fill inside the house? Has the internal space some peculiar properties?

К: Home is full of light in daytime, but it’s rather cool at night inside. Round hatches-portholes in the roof are especially impressive, they add some “cosmic” features. We abandoned the built-in furniture to increase the space inside. As the result, the house is comfortable for six persons. The space under the construction we were using for a bar at the Kazantip. It is also suitable for summer terrace with hammocks.

L: It is not your first experience in building. Heard, that you start building of a boat. Tell us about your different projects or ideas.

К: My role in boat-building is not so important: just to bring together the creativity and to return it to the right direction. As they say, the efforts of many people will lead to the goal. A team from “Ostyahts” shipyard is building a boat. It should see the water in 2011 and to go Around the World in 2012. Without haste, by common efforts…We are working at second house for the Kazantip also. If all goes well, maybe we will establish small-scale production of mobile homes-transformers.

L: You hadn’t got problems with the foundation and send because of construction. But what external factors may threaten the house?

К: Strong wind, beloved by all kiters, is the most dangerous external factor. The house has a large “sail”, that is why we had to attach the supports, so called “anchors”. It is being tested for resistance to winter storms of the Black Sea now. All of us will have an opportunity to check the results and the strength of “anchors” next summer!

В этом году на пляжах Казантипа, признанного лучшим фестивалем на IBIZA DJ AWARDS 2010, вместе с другими новыми объектами провожал закаты дом-трансформер. В деталях о сооружении рассказывает видный кайт-серфер, изобретатель и мечтатель, который никогда никуда не спешит:

Л: Итак, идеальный пляжный дом для кайтера? Дом или бар?

Кирилл Черенков: Мне кажется, что это идеальный пляжный дом не только для кайтера. Это вполне приличная база для исследователей дикой природы Африки, небольшой передвижной ангар для полевого аэродрома… Преимущества данной конструкции налицо: легко перевозится на прицепе обычным автомобилем и просто раскладывается, превращаясь в двухкомнатные “апартаменты”. К тому же можно эффективно использовать пространство под домом.

Л: Поделись, каким был путь от набросков конструкции, которые я видела прошлой зимой, до реализованного проекта, пережившего Казантип.

К: Своей эту идею я назвать никак не могу. Это удачное развитие идеи Ермолова Владимира из компании “Вертеко”, доведенной до ума и воплощенной в жизнь Шадриным Денисом (в широких кругах известного как “Ос”), гениальным инженером, на счету которого не один проект подобного рода. Вдохновение мы черпали из фильмов про звездные войны, из хроник про аппараты “Аполлон 13″ и “Луноход 2″.

Л: Какие ощущения возникают внутри дома? Каковы особенности внутреннего пространства?

К: Внутри достаточно светло днем, а ночью прохладно. Особенно впечатляют круглые люки-иллюминаторы в крыше, подчеркивают космические черты проекта. Мы сознательно отказались от встроенной мебели, чтобы увеличить пространство. В результате в доме комфортно размещаются 6 человек. На Казантипе пространство под ним мы использовали для бара. В другой ситуации там может быть летняя веранда или “гамачная поляна”.

Л: Это не первый твой опыт в строительстве. Знаю, что до этого дома ты начал строить лодку. Расскажи про другие свои замыслы, проекты?

К: Моя роль в постройке лодки минимальна: собрать воедино творческий потенциал и направить его в правильное русло. Как говорится, усилия многих приведут к цели. Над постройкой лодки трудится целый коллектив верфи “Остяхтс”. Без спешки, общими усилиями, лодка должна увидеть воду в 2011 году, чтобы отправится в кругосветку в 2012. Сейчас мы работаем над созданием второго дома для Казантипа и, если все пойдет успешно, попробуем наладить мелкосерийное производство мобильных домов-трансформеров.

Л: Благодаря особенностям конструкции, решать проблему песка и фундамента вам не пришлось. А какие внешние факторы могут угрожать дому?

К: Самый неприятный внешний фактор для дома - горячо любимый всеми кайтерами ветер. Дом имеет большую парусность, поэтому нам пришлось прикрепить опоры к, т. н., “якорям”. На всякий случай. Сейчас дом проходит полевые испытания на сопротивляемость зимним штормам Черного моря. Возможность проверить расчеты и прочность «якорей» будет у всех нас следующим летом!

Этот блог из числа тех, в которых изображениям отведена главная роль. Отныне публикую фотографии большего размера.

Главное, что люди не перестали фантазировать и мечтать. Ведь некоторым даже на это нужна определенная смелость. А к тем, кто старается превратить мечты в реальность приходит вознаграждение, и задуманное материализуется, обретает форму, текстуру, а в данном случае еще и дарит свет…

Дело было так: в конце зимы поступило предложение воплотить замысел о двух люстрах. Ткань и каркасы прилагались. После нескольких эскизов определились с силуэтом и решили украсить основание ламп бусинами разных оттенков бежевого и бирюзового, всего - около тысячи. Большинство из них так и не было задействовано в этот раз. Вместо них сейчас лампы расшиты белыми и прозрачными кристаллами Swarovski и бисером:

Перед монтажом светильников появились еще гирлянды “пузырьков”, которые заиграли при свете, и медузы-близняшки ожили.
